How to Change Your iPhone Name — Settings, Finder, and AirDrop

Your iPhone name is more than a label in Settings. It shows up when you AirDrop photos to a friend, appear on a Wi-Fi hotspot list, sync in Finder or iTunes, show in Find My, and identify iCloud backups. If your phone still says "John's iPhone 8" years after an upgrade, or you bought used and see someone else's name, changing it takes under a minute.

This guide covers how to rename your iPhone on iOS 17 and later, what updates automatically, and what to do when the old name lingers on a router or Mac.

Why Change Your iPhone Name?

Common reasons:

• Privacy in public — strangers shouldn't see your full name in AirDrop lists
• Multiple devices — distinguish "Work iPhone" from "Personal iPhone"
• Used device — remove previous owner's label
• Professional settings — generic name for demo or loaner phones
• Clarity on networks — identify your hotspot among several family phones

Renaming is free and reversible. It does not affect your phone number, Apple ID, or data.

Step 1: Change iPhone Name in Settings

On iPhone (iOS 17 and later)

1. Open Settings

2. Tap General

3. Tap About

4. Tap Name at the top

5. Clear the field and type the new name (avoid special characters that confuse older routers)

6. Tap Done or tap away to save

The change saves immediately. No restart required.

On iPad

Same path: Settings → General → About → Name. iPad name appears in Sidecar, AirDrop, and iCloud device lists the same way.

Step 2: Verify Where the New Name Appears

After renaming, check:

AirDrop

Open Control Center → AirDrop on another Apple device nearby — your phone should list the new name within seconds.

Personal Hotspot

Settings → Personal Hotspot — other devices scanning for Wi-Fi see this name. Toggle hotspot off and on if an old name cached on a laptop.

Finder on Mac

Connect via USB or view in sidebar — name should match. If not, eject, disconnect, reconnect.

Find My

Find My app → Devices — updated name syncs when online.

iCloud backup list

Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → Backups — device entry uses current name for future backups.

Step 3: Change Name from a Mac (Optional)

If iPhone is connected:

1. Open Finder

2. Select iPhone in sidebar

3. Click the current name at top of window

4. Type new name and press Return

This edits the same field as Settings → About → Name.

Naming Tips

• Keep it short — 15–25 characters works well on hotspot lists
• Avoid emoji if you share hotspot with older TVs or car systems
• Do not use names impersonating Apple Support — "Apple Security" as a device name confuses people and looks suspicious
• For families, try "Alex – iPhone 15" instead of identical "iPhone" entries

What Changing the Name Does Not Do

• Does not change your Apple ID email or iCloud account name
• Does not rename Bluetooth accessories paired to the phone
• Does not change SIM or eSIM label from carrier
• Does not remove Activation Lock or Find My — those stay tied to Apple ID

To change your Apple ID display name, go to Settings → [your name] → Name, Phone Numbers, Email — separate from device name.

Privacy Note for AirDrop

Renaming helps, but AirDrop discoverability matters more for privacy:

Settings → General → AirDrop — choose Contacts Only or Receiving Off in crowded places instead of Everyone.

Combine a neutral device name with conservative AirDrop settings so you are not broadcasting identity in cafes or conferences.

Using Shortcuts to Rename (Optional)

Power users can create an iOS Shortcut that opens About settings directly:

1. Open Shortcuts app → +

2. Add action Open URLs with prefs:root=General&path=About (may require allowing untrusted shortcuts in older iOS — Apple sometimes restricts root URLs)

3. Name shortcut "Rename iPhone"

This is optional — Settings path is already fast. Shortcuts break when Apple changes URL schemes.

Enterprise and Supervised Devices

Company-owned iPhones managed by MDM (Mobile Device Management) may lock the Name field. If you cannot edit:

• Contact IT help desk — they may push naming policy remotely
• Personal Apple ID on work phone still should not use misleading names on corporate networks

Do not rename devices to impersonate infrastructure ("Wi-Fi Router", "IT Support") — that social-engineering trick appears in phishing guides and gets devices flagged on networks.
