How to Reset AirPods — Pro, Max, and Standard Models
AirPods usually pair instantly — until one bud goes silent, they stick on the wrong Apple ID, or a used pair shows the previous owner's Find My lock. A factory reset clears pairing history and fixes many connection bugs without a trip to Apple Store.
This guide covers AirPods (all generations), AirPods Pro (1 and 2), and AirPods Max. Steps differ slightly by model; read the section that matches your hardware.
When to Reset AirPods
Reset helps when:
- Only left or right AirPod plays audio
- AirPods won't connect or show "Not Connected"
- Battery percentages look wrong after firmware update
- You are selling or gifting them
- They pair to someone else's iCloud (used purchase — verify Find My first)
- Automatic device switching behaves erratically
Try simple fixes first: clean contacts, charge case 15 minutes, forget device in Bluetooth settings. If issues remain, reset.
Before You Reset
1. Put both AirPods in the charging case and close lid 30 seconds
2. Note which device they are paired to — iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android
3. If buying used, confirm seller removed them from Find My — locked AirPods cannot be fully yours
Reset removes pairing from all devices signed into the same iCloud account for that pair.
How to Reset AirPods and AirPods Pro (In Case)
Works for AirPods (1st–3rd gen) and AirPods Pro (1 and 2) with Lightning or USB-C case.
Step 1: Forget on iPhone or iPad
1. Settings → Bluetooth
2. Tap info (i) next to your AirPods name
3. Tap Forget This Device → confirm
Repeat on other Apple devices if they still list the AirPods.
Step 2: Factory reset with case button
1. Open case lid with AirPods inside
2. Press and hold setup button on back of case
3. Hold about 15 seconds until status light flashes amber, then white
4. Release button — AirPods are reset
Lightning cases: light is inside lid between buds. USB-C Pro 2 case: button and light on front.
Step 3: Pair again
1. Keep lid open near unlocked iPhone
2. Follow Connect animation on screen
3. Tap Connect, then Done
4. Run firmware update by leaving paired on charge near iPhone overnight if prompted
How to Reset AirPods Max
AirPods Max have no charging case button — reset uses buttons on the ear cup.
Steps
1. Forget AirPods Max in Settings → Bluetooth on all devices
2. Press and hold Digital Crown and Noise Control together
3. Hold about 15 seconds until LED flashes amber, then white
4. Release — headphones reset
5. Hold Max near iPhone with lid... (no lid) — proximity pairing animation should appear
If LED never turns white, charge via Lightning/USB-C 10 minutes and retry.
Reset AirPods Connected to Android
Apple's reset still works — Android does not need Forget first but should after reset:
1. Perform case button reset (amber → white)
2. On Android: Settings → Bluetooth → Pair new device
3. Select AirPods from list
4. Features like spatial audio and Find My remain Apple-only
After Reset: Check Audio Balance and Firmware
Balance check (one side quiet)
Settings → Accessibility → Audio/Visual → Balance — center slider. A bumped slider mimics "broken" AirPod.
Firmware
Apple pushes AirPods firmware silently. After reset, keep paired near iPhone on Wi-Fi and charging. Check version in Settings → Bluetooth → AirPods → About.
Giving AirPods to Someone Else
1. Reset using steps above
2. Remove from Find My: Find My app → Devices → AirPods → Remove This Device
3. Confirm new owner sees setup animation, not Activation Lock message
Used AirPods locked to another Apple ID may need seller to remove remotely — resetting alone does not bypass theft-deterrent locks on some components.
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Fix |
|-------|-----|
| Amber light never turns white | Charge case and buds; clean case pins |
| Only one AirPod connects | Reset; check for debris on stem contacts |
| Reset but won't pair | Restart iPhone; toggle Bluetooth; try another device |
| AirPods Pro crackling | Update firmware; reset; check ear tip fit test |
| Find My still shows old owner | Seller must remove from iCloud — contact Apple Support with proof if legitimate purchase |
| Android skips after reset | Clear Bluetooth cache (varies by phone); re-pair |
Maintenance Tips to Avoid Frequent Resets
- Store in case when not in use — case keeps charge and pairing stable
- Avoid extreme heat (dashboard summer storage)
- Clean mesh and stems with dry cloth — not liquids in openings
- Update iOS and macOS — Bluetooth stack fixes matter
Warranty and Apple Support
If reset does not fix hardware defects — battery drains in hours, crackling that persists after firmware update, case not charging — gather serial number from Settings → Bluetooth → AirPods → About (when connected) or inside case lid, then contact Apple Support. Reset is a software step; it cannot repair failed batteries or water damage.
Resetting AirPods is forget Bluetooth → hold setup button until amber then white → pair again. AirPods Max use Digital Crown + Noise Control instead. One reset cycle fixes most ghost connections — and always clear Find My before handing them to a new owner.
