How to Reset an Apple Watch — Soft Reset, Unpair, and Factory Erase

Your Apple Watch can freeze, drain battery oddly, or need a clean slate before you sell it or send it for service. Apple gives you three levels of reset: a soft restart (like rebooting a phone), unpairing from iPhone (the normal "reset" most people need), and erase all content on the watch itself when the phone is unavailable.

This guide covers all three, plus Activation Lock — skipping that step turns a reset into a problem for the next owner.

When to Use Which Reset

| Situation | Method |

|-----------|--------|

| Watch frozen or apps misbehaving | Soft restart |

| Setting up on a new iPhone or selling the watch | Unpair from iPhone |

| Lost iPhone or watch won't unpair normally | Erase on watch |

| Preparing for Apple repair | Unpair or erase; note serial number |

A soft restart does not remove health data, apps, or your Apple ID. Unpairing and erasing wipe local data and remove Activation Lock if you enter your Apple ID password when prompted.

Method 1: Soft Restart (Force Restart)

Use this when the screen is stuck, Workout won't end, or watch is sluggish.

Steps

1. Press and hold Side button and Digital Crown together

2. Hold until you see the Apple logo (about 10–15 seconds)

3. Release both buttons and wait for watch to boot

On watchOS 10+, the Side button opens Control Center by default — the two-button hold still forces restart.

This does not delete anything. Try it before heavier resets.

Unpairing backs up watch data to iPhone (if backup is enabled) and restores factory settings on the watch.

Steps

1. Keep Apple Watch on its charger and near iPhone

2. Open Watch app on iPhone

3. Tap All Watches (top left) if you have multiple

4. Tap info (i) next to the watch you are resetting

5. Tap Unpair Apple Watch

6. Confirm — choose Keep or Remove cellular plan if you have GPS + Cellular model

7. Enter Apple ID password when asked — this disables Activation Lock

The watch erases and restarts. Pairing again offers Restore from Backup during setup.

What gets removed

  • Apps and settings
  • Passcode and paired cards in Wallet (re-add after setup)
  • Health and activity data on watch (backup may restore to replacement watch)

Method 3: Erase All Content and Settings on the Watch

Use when iPhone is missing or Watch app won't connect.

Steps

1. On Apple Watch: Settings → General → Reset

2. Tap Erase All Content and Settings

3. Enter watch passcode if set

4. For GPS + Cellular: choose to keep or remove cellular plan

5. Enter Apple ID password to turn off Activation Lock

If you forget passcode, Apple documents passcode reset via iPhone or multiple failed attempts leading to erase — follow support.apple.com for your watchOS version.

Method 4: Reset During Setup on a New iPhone

If you already unpaired but watch shows old setup:

1. Place watch on charger near new iPhone

2. Follow on-screen pairing animation

3. Choose Set Up as New or Restore from Backup

Activation Lock: Do Not Skip This

Find My on Apple Watch ties to your Apple ID. Erasing without signing out leaves Activation Lock, blocking the next user.

Always:

  • Unpair from iPhone or
  • Enter Apple ID password during Erase All Content

Buying used? Ask seller to remove from their iCloud account and show watch at Hello screen, not passcode lock.

Before You Sell or Give Away the Watch

1. Unpair from iPhone (creates backup automatically if iCloud backup includes watch)

2. Confirm watch shows Hello setup screen

3. Remove cellular plan with carrier if applicable

4. Sign out of Apple ID on any shared family payment methods tied to App Store purchases on watch

Keep serial number and proof of sale for warranty transfers.

Troubleshooting

| Problem | Fix |

|---------|-----|

| Unpair stuck on "Erasing" | Keep watch on charger near iPhone 30+ minutes; restart both devices |

| Activation Lock after erase | Sign in with original Apple ID at apple.com/activationlock or contact Apple Support with proof of purchase |

| Backup not offered on new setup | Ensure old iPhone backup completed; check iCloud storage |

| Cellular plan still billing | Contact carrier to cancel watch line |

| Passcode forgotten | Erase via iPhone Watch app or Apple support procedure |

After Reset: Setting Up Again

1. Pair with iPhone — hold camera to animation

2. Sign in with Apple ID

3. Enable Location, Siri, Wallet as needed

4. Restore backup or set up fresh

5. Re-install essential apps from iPhone Watch app Available Apps

Family Setup and Child Watches

Family Setup watches managed from a guardian iPhone reset differently — guardian uses Watch app → Family Watches → [child watch] → Remove rather than child having their own Apple ID password. Follow Apple's Family Setup erase docs so parental controls and school modes clear correctly.

Resetting an Apple Watch is straightforward when you unpair from iPhone and enter your Apple ID password. Soft restart fixes glitches; full erase prepares the device for a new chapter — just never leave Activation Lock on for the next person.
